Vision after the sermon, Gauguin

I gather Cork’s Kino couldn’t be saved from closure.

Small, then, the chances of seeing this on the big screen. It’s got wine, intrigue, passion, bodices that rip, and an angel. Dead handy, angels, you might say, when there’s a creativity deficit to plug, but I don’t mind them: I remember being genuinely startled in Gide’s Les Faux-Monnayeurs where suddenly POW! there’s an angel, and even dauby old Gauguin didn’t make too much of a mess of the one you see above.

I was pretty sure I’d written here before about Elizabeth Knox’s novel, on which the film is loosely based – apparently not.

If you can stomach a bit of magic realism, then I recommend the book. We’ll have to wait and see about the film.
