Agricola Castellana Cuatro Rayas Sauvignon 2011 (100% Sauvignon Blanc) This astonishing Spanish Sauvignon was awarded one of only 20 Grand Golds at the 2009 Zarcillo awards, which judged over 3,000 wines from 23 countries! Powerful and fresh with grassy aromas that mark out a distinctively Sauvignon territory, but replace the not-always-welcome cat's-pee edge with something fruitier. In the mouth this is a deliciously refreshing wine, a lip-smacker, with fruit juiciness and astringent restraint in perfect balance. It's substantial, but not bulky, and the finish lingers and develops through a complex of fruit and herbal flavours. Rueda's wines made from the native Verdejo grape rightly have a growing following - but this superlative bottle shows how modern Spanish winemaking can produce the most outstandingly elegant, distinguished and simply enjoyable wines from global varieties too.
